Poll shows kids' opinions play big role when parents are buying a home
A recently published Harris Poll commissioned by SunTrust Mortgage shows that kids play a big role in their parents' home-buying decisions and topping their want list for their family's new home is having their own bedroom.
According to the Harris Poll, 55 percent of those homebuyers who have a child under 18 say their children's opinion plays a big factor in their decision. Among millennial parents, those ages 18 to 36, their kids' influence on the home-buying decision was even greater, with 74 percent saying it was a factor.
According to the poll, having their own bedroom topped kids' requests by 57 percent, followed by a large backyard and proximity to parks and activities. Coming in next on the "must haves" list were proximity to school, friends and swimming pools.
Also according to the poll, renters with kids under 18 say their children's opinion plays an even bigger factor.
"As a parent of two kids, I know from experience that including children in the home-buying process is not only fun for the whole family, but also educational for our homebuyers of tomorrow," SunTrust's head of mortgage banking Todd Chamberlain said in a statement. "Once the kids give a nod and the parents agree, SunTrust offers a simple way to apply for a mortgage online with SmartGUIDE, which cuts the time it takes to complete a typical mortgage application in half."
